ECC-ITALY Venice Biennial "PERSONAL STRUCTURES" 2022

In this troubled world of earthquakes, floods, wars and global warming, it is a sheer delight to find a dedicated sculptor with such an ironic sense of humor and a highly developed sense of the ridiculous. While Martin George can undoubtedly make a totally convincing piece of modernist sculpture, viewable from all directions and immaculately constructed, he also likes in catching the spectator unawares. Things are frequently not quite as they first seem.

Oops, Bronze doesn't Burn!

Last year I installed “In Transit” at Settlers Square in Dandenong.

This sculpture had an intervention and was set on fire. Scientific experimentation is great, but I was chuffed that the scientists thought the bronze pallet was indeed timber and flammable, a victory for interred obfuscation, and sculpture in general.

The sculpture has been restored, it looks great now also.
